Coach Profile - Kayne Middleton - Touch Rugby

SKC years coaching

I have been coaching SKC Touch for the last 3 years, and this will be my 4th.

How did you get involved in coaching at SKC?

A good mate and ex-SKC PE teacher, Mr Sam Tatupu, floated the idea to be a few years back as we had a few keen players at the time and a couple of rep players and thought it would be good to start up a team to give the kids more exposure and opportunity to play touch that is local instead of travelling just to play.

What sports do/have you played?

  • Rugby Union
  • Rugby League
  • AFL
  • Touch rugby

Have you played any sport at a representative level?

  • Have been fortunate to represent NZ in touch for multiple years
  • Represented NZ in AFL
  • IRANZ rugby academy

What is your favourite part about coaching?

Being able to pass on or share skills and experiences that I've been lucky enough to go through while playing. Seeing young kids want to learn and enjoy the game is something that is fulfilling.

What is your personal coaching philosophy?

To help individuals reach their maximum potential and identify key aspects that will help them achieve this. Creating an enjoyable environment is something I'm also big on, with the expectation that we are here to work on a goal and take steps through self awareness and consistent purpose driven actions.

Speak about a challenge you've faced and what you did to get through it. Sporting or otherwise.

I guess the most recent would be transitioning from being a player into being a coach, especially coming from senior rugby and touch, where one minute your teammates, the next you the coach. Finding the balance and making sure communication is a top priority is huge in recognising that I guess both parties know what the go is, what is acceptable and tolerable, and what things are out of discussion.

Advice to young sportspeople?

Just make the most of every opportunity you have, especially while still in school. Being exposed to a lot of different sports and team environments is great and is not something you always get once those school days are over. Talent only takes you so far in sports, and hard work and dedication is what it takes to get to that next level.

Favourite quote? Sporting or otherwise

"When reeds stand alone, they are vulnerable, but when bound together, are unbreakable."
