St Kevin's College: A Legacy of Faith, Community, and Progress

Countdown to 100 Years

Save the Date - 5th–7th February 2027

A Journey Through Time

On February 6th, 1927, St Kevin's College officially opened its doors to the first group of students, marking the beginning of what has become a proud and enduring tradition. However, the story of St Kevin's College begins long before that momentous day, tracing its roots back to the late 1800s and the arrival of a Scottish-born farmer, John McLean.

After settling in New Zealand, John McLean established himself in the Waitaki Valley, where he became an integral part of the local community. Upon his passing in 1902, McLean's property in Ōamaru was passed down to his nephew, John McLean Buckley. A man of vision, Buckley developed the land, constructing the iconic Redcastle residence, now lovingly known as The Castle, and in 1903, the Stables, a building that would later play a pivotal role in the college's early history.

In 1927, these historic buildings were purchased by a Catholic religious order and transformed into the first incarnation of St Kevin's College - a Catholic boys' boarding and day school. The legacy of the Castle and the Stables is inextricably linked to the heart of the school, serving as a symbol of the enduring commitment to education, community, and faith.

A Bold Step into the Future

While St Kevin's College has deep roots in tradition, it has always embraced forward-thinking choices that have shaped its evolution. One of the most transformative steps came in 1983 when St Kevin's made the decision to become a co-educational institution. Following the closure of nearby Teschemakers, this move saw the introduction of female students into the boarding and day school community. This bold decision was made at the same time as St Kevin's College was integrated into the New Zealand state education system, reinforcing the school's commitment to adapting and growing in a rapidly changing world.

St Kevin's College's move to co-education reflected the changing social landscape. It solidified its role as a modern, inclusive, and progressive institution while remaining deeply committed to its Roman Catholic ethos. This integration of new ideas and values has remained a hallmark of the school, positioning it as a leader in educational innovation and nurturing spiritual and personal development.

The St Kevin's College of Today

Today, St Kevin's College is a dynamic, thriving co-educational institution that continues to evolve. The school has expanded with state-of-the-art buildings and facilities that enrich the learning experience, ensuring students can access the best resources and opportunities. Despite its growth, the school's core values — grounded in Faith, Family, Integrity, Respect, and Excellence — continue to guide every aspect of the St Kevin's College experience.

As we celebrate 100 years of St Kevin's College, we look at the past with pride and the future with excitement and anticipation. The journey that began with John McLean and continues through the generations of students, staff, and the wider community is one that reflects a commitment to faith, education, and progress.
