I had five happy years at SKC. My abiding memory is of the high quality of the teaching and the dedication of the teachers to ensure we develop as well-rounded future citizens. We were challenged to be our best selves but were also well supported. This student focus was even more impressive given the major issues the school was facing at the time including the changing balance between Christian Brother and ‘lay’ teachers and the prospect of co-education.

After finishing at SKC I studied veterinary science at Massey University and worked in private veterinary practice in Invercargill and the UK before beginning specialist training in veterinary internal medicine in the US. After completing a PhD in nutrition at the University of California Davis, I returned to Massey as a lecturer - eventually going on to lead the vet school. I then became Dean of Science at the University of Auckland, followed by Vice-Chancellor at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington from which I have recently retired after eight years in the role. I am currently Chair of the New Zealand Veterinary Association. I have two adult children both of whom are currently enjoying time in the UK – one working and the other studying. Since retiring, my wife and I spend most of our time restoring the native forest on our property in the foothills of the Hunua Ranges - although I occasionally head off for a fish with my bro Parry Guilford at our bach in Nelson Lakes.

Our teachers at the time set high standards and expected us to work hard while holding true to our values – an approach that prepared me well for university and working life. They also stimulated a strong interest in social issues by welcoming debate inside and outside the classroom. They were also not afraid to provide honest appraisals. In my case, I can still clearly remember being advised in 3rd form that my grades were not good enough to get into vet school. The gauntlet was so laid, and nothing was going to stop me from there!
