Visual Arts Burns Memorial Art Exhibition
St Kevin’s College Visual Art students have been working hard on their art projects all year. A selection of artworks are currently on display at the Forrester Gallery in Ōamaru for the annual Burns Memorial Exhibition.
Both the Year 9 and 10 Visual Arts classes focus on building various visual art skills and creating finished works of art for exhibition. The Year 9 students have designed and made screen-printed tote bags with a social justice theme.
The Year 10 students have again designed and made some amazing personal kōwhaiwhai panels that use carving and painting skills. Symbols such as the koru, mangōpare, kape, and ngutu kākā have been intertwined with natural elements to convey a personal meaning.
Our second class of Year 10s has learnt how to create two-colour reduction woodcuts. Design skills such as colour theory, balance, repetition, and contrast were used to create prints with impact. Thank you to our relief teacher, Sarah Pitman, for the expert instruction in printmaking.
The paintings of Sasha Slee (Yr 12) and Hana Davies (Yr 13) are featured in the exhibition this year. Both painters have extended their painting practice this year by creating lush background textures and using fine detail in their figures.
Our Year 13 students have taken their learning further and created moving image title sequences using the skills they have learnt in painting, design and media studies. Moving images, including digital animation and film, are practical ways that Visual Art skills can be used in the creative industries. The Level 3 Visual Arts courses offer students the opportunity to learn to use Adobe programmes to create moving images.
