Teacher Farewell Profile - Amelia Davies
What years did you work at St Kevin's College, and in which departments did you teach?
I taught at St Kevin's from 2022 to 2024 in the Physical Education and Health Department.
What have been some of your most memorable experiences during your time here?
My most memorable experiences are the school camps and sports trips I have been on. Working in the PE department has meant that I have been able to go on tramping, mountain biking, skiing, and year 10 camps. I have also coached hockey for the past three seasons and have participated in numerous sports exchanges and tournament weeks.
How has teaching at St Kevin's shaped your career or teaching philosophy?
I have been really lucky to work in a relatively small department, with only one other full-time teacher, which has meant that I have been able to be in charge of specific courses. This has also meant that in three years, I have been able to teach all the different year groups as well as Cambridge IGCSE. Over the past two years, I have also worked in the Pastoral care team, which I have really enjoyed and look forward to developing further in that area.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your time with the students and staff here?
The most rewarding aspect of my time with the students and staff here is the relationships that I have made. I have been really supported to grow in my career as a teacher and would only have been able to do that with solid relationships with staff. Also, all the students I have had the pleasure of teaching or coaching have been amazing and seeing them develop as individuals is rewarding.
Were there any particular challenges that significantly impacted your approach to teaching?
I started teaching during COVID, meeting students and trying to build relationships while wearing masks for the first term.
What advice would you give to students and teachers continuing their journey at St Kevin's College?
Do as much as you can and say yes to trying new things. However, also learn what is too much for you and that saying no is ok.
What are your plans for the future, and how do you envision your career or life changing after leaving?
My immediate plans are to head off travelling for a year or so. Then, depending on how it goes, I could live in England or Australia and work in teaching again. Eventually, the plan is to head back home to Christchurch and get another job as a Physical Education teacher. I would also really like to work in a Pastoral Care team again.
We thank Miss Davies for her dedication as a valued staff member and mentor to our students and SKC sports and wish her the best in her future endeavours.
