The Stables Restoration project holds special significance for many past boarding students. Originally built to accommodate horses, the Stables retain many of their historical features.
Despite serving a variety of purposes over the years, the building remains remarkably true to its original construction, with decorative elements, high ceilings, and light-filled spaces that reflect its heritage.
In recent years, the building has been used only for storage following the Christchurch earthquakes and subsequent changes to earthquake-strengthening requirements.
The focus of this project is to upgrade the Stables to meet compliance standards, allowing this much-loved building to once again become a functional and valued part of the College.
Standing proudly above the College, Redcastle is an 118-year-old homestead originally built by St John McLean Buckley in 1903.
Since the early days of St Kevin’s College, Redcastle has played an important role in school life, serving as Principal’s accommodation and hosting Board meetings and community gatherings.
The current project aims to preserve and revitalise this iconic building by bringing it to modern building standards.
Guided by the belief that historic homes thrive when filled with life and activity, this development will upgrade Redcastle to meet commercial residential standards while ensuring it continues to serve as a symbol of the College’s heritage and identity.
The Equestrian Centre is a distinctive and growing part of the St Kevin’s College offering.
Developed to make effective use of available land, support boarding students, and create a unique point of difference for international students
This initiative reconnects with the College’s early history, where equestrian studies were part of learning at the original Teschmakers site.
Today, the programme supports the Primary Industries curriculum at NCEA Levels 2 and 3 and provides students with valuable, hands-on learning experiences.
The Centre has also proven highly attractive to international students, particularly from countries such as Germany and Japan, where access to equestrian opportunities can be limited.
As interest continues to grow, the College plans to further develop and enhance the facility, building on its success and expanding opportunities for students.
